Built-in memory (MEMORY.md + USER.md) is always on. External providers are additive: pick one and you get semantic search, knowledge graphs, or cross-session reasoning on top. hermes memory setup is the interactive picker that handles the install + config. Three providers ship bundled (local: Holographic, ByteRover. cloud: RetainDB) and leave core on October 15, 2026; Honcho, Hindsight, Supermemory, OpenViking, and Mem0 come from the plugin catalog with hermes plugins install and migrate automatically when your profile names one. Everything a provider receives passes a secret scrub. Profile isolation is automatic.
